In the Garden

Zones 4-9.  Thrives in part sun and moist soil.  Codonopsis is a vine and will happily climb up a tree trunk or fence.  We have it growing up a wild cherry tree and also acting as ground cover.  

Plant root vertically in 6 inches of moist soil.  Cover with mulch.

After the plants establish (about 5 years) We harvest in the fall after the plant dies back. Dig gently into the earth using a spade and pull the white roots.  It is difficult to get all of the codonopsis root and so you will likely have more the following season.

In the Apothecary

Called Dang-shen in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Codonopsis root as a sweet taste similar to carrot and is easily dried and added to broths as an immune support during winter months.
