Each order contains 3 rootlets.
In the Garden
Zones 3-8. Thrives dappled sun and moist mulched soil.
Plant rootlet in 6 inches of moist soil. Bud pointing toward the sun. Cover with 2-3 inches of mulch. Plant 2 feet apart and water well.
After the plants establish (about 3 years) we harvest in the fall dormancy (after the plant dies back). Dig gently into the earth using a spade. After three years the root may be divided so that some may be placed back into the ground for additional harvest in another 2-3 years. If you are VERY lucky, the plant will seed and you will also have seedling black cohosh. We have one "mother plant" here at Meeting House that reliably offers seedlings each spring.
In the Apothecary
Use an extract of fresh or dried root in alcohol for hormonal support (especially in menopause). Do NOT use if pregnant, unless under the supervision of a health practitioner, since black cohosh can also be used to induce labor.
